★ ★ ★ ★ ★ A short distance away from the port, the Portara is a beautiful romantic location at sunset. Look at the beautiful couples and the view! ?

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The symbol of the island of Naxos. It is an impressive main gate with large pillars of stone. It is a short climb around up and you can walk around. It is popular with sunset seekers but it can get very busy, so get there earlier for a good spot.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The portara the symbol of Naxos the remaining door frame of the temple of Apollo from 531 BC ( although it was never finished). It position in the harbour and at the end of the main street means you will end up here at some point and boy is it worth it.
Watching the sun go down here is just something else. And watching as the lights come on is magical

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The Temple of Apollo was one of the most amazing sites I have seen in my life. It was awe inspiring standing near these magnificent ruins watching the sunset.
Greece is rich with history and stunning beauty that everyone must see at least once! I can’t wait to return to the islands.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ There is just something so surreal about only a portera (gate/door) standing from what was intended to be a full temple. According to records it was never finished, for whatever reason. Now it creates a unique subject for viewing, contemplation, and GORGEOUS sunsets. We loved checking it out from different angles, and cannot decided which was best. We recommend it for any time of the day, though especially sunrise or sunset. The wind ? does really pick up in the afternoon, so it can get uncomfortable and/or cold ? A light jacket is definitely recommended! EnJOY!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ We went at roughly 10AM and it was cloudy sky's and really windy but it is just simply gorgeous once you're up there.
You gotta walk across a little path and pray to Poseiden not to splash you with his small cresting waves.
And the walk back to the city is also STUNNING! Very very very picture friendly at all angles.
Lasty, it's not stroller / wheel chair friendly but you can leave it right at the bottom and head on up either it. Very safe.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Can't miss this popular spot on the island. This beautiful marble structure is the first thing you see when you arrive in Naxos. It's free to visit but parking at the port can be difficult. Best to walk here. The walkway to the temple might be wet when the waves are splashing so beware of the situation before crossing. When the water's calm, you can swim in this area too.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ This can’t be missed on a visit to Naxos. It is a stunning huge marble gate situated near the Harbour. We visited in early May on a bright sunny day and we were fortunate to have the surrounding area to ourselves. It is fenced but only close up so you have plenty of space to wander around it. No cost to visit.
This marble gate is the remaining part of an unfinished temple of Apollo of 530 BC, is the island’s emblem and main landmark. Apparently the four parts of the gate weigh about 20 tons.
We are hoping to go back to see it also at sunset before we leave.
