★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Olimpia (Ολυμπία) is the most famous place of Zeus worship in ancient Greece. At the foot of the hill, Panhellian Olympics dedicated to Zeus, called from this site Olympic, took place every 4 years. The first recorded Olympic Games took place in 776 BC.
From the seventh century BC huge buildings were built here. The most important of them, Temple of Zeus was completed in about 456 BC. In addition, there were a number of other buildings, including the temple of Hera. Sports facilities were created around the sanctuary, including Olympic stadium. On the ruins of the ancient temple of Hera is lit the Olympic torch before every modern Olympic games.

Olimpia (gr.
Wokół sanktuarium powstawały obiekty sportowe, m.in. stadion olimpijski. Tutaj jest zapalany znicz olimpijski przed każdą nowożytną olimpiadą.
