The complex that was first built in the 5th century B.C. and was dedicated to the hero Amphiaraos, contained temple, altar, baths, stoa and of course the theater, as well as an entire settlement complete with houses, shops, accommodation for visitors, and agora. The golden age of the site was during the Hellenistic era, from the 3rd century BC to the Roman conquest in 146 BC, when Oropos belonged to the Boeotian League. Various games were held every year on the site, and once every five years a major competition (the Great Amphiareia), was held with participants that gathered from all over the area of continental Greece, as well as Southern Italy and Asia Minor. The theater had a capacity of around 300 spectators, and was used for religious and cultural events. The site that is situated in a narrow, wooded valley full of beautiful nature, is open to the public and the entrance is with payment. It is worth a visit if you are in the area, because it offers a unique opportunity to get acquainted with the magic of the ancient Greek world.
