★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Τα δύο απότομα τούνελ μεταξύ Βάρκιζας και Αγίας Μαρίνας Κορωπίου που βρίσκονται στο 31ο χιλιόμετρο της Λεωφόρου Αθηνών Σουνίου, είναι από τα πιο χαρακτηριστικά σημεία του οδικού δικτύου στην Αττική και είναι γνωστά ως οι «τρύπες του Καραμανλή». Η διάνοιξή τους επέτρεψε την επικοινωνία της Αθήνας με τη νότια ακτής της Αττικής, ενώ το σημείο απέκτησε και μεγάλη ιστορική σημασία, καθώς εκεί στις 13 Αυγούστου του 1968 ο Αλέκος Παναγούλης προσπάθησε να δολοφονήσει τον δικτάτορα Γεώργιο Παπαδόπουλο.
Έκρυψε τα εκρηκτικά στη σήραγγα, η αυτοσχέδια βόμβα εξερράγη, αλλά το αυτοκίνητο του δικτάτορα είχε περάσει για ελάχιστα δευτερόλεπτα από το σημείο.
 The two abrupt tunnels between Varkiza and Agia Marina Koropi, located on the 31st kilometer of Athens Sounion Avenue, are among the most characteristic points of the Attica road network and are known as the "holes of Karamanlis". Their opening enabled Athens to communicate with the southern coast of Attica, and the site gained great historical significance, as on August 13, 1968, Alekos Panagoulis attempted to assassinate the dictator Georgios Papadopoulos.

Όσοι χρησιμοποιούν την παραλιακή για να πάνε στο Σούνιο γνωρίζουν καλά τις Τρύπες Καραμανλή, τις δύο σήραγγες στην Αθηνών-Σουνίου που έχουν μεγάλη σημασία και την ίδια στιγμή αποτελούν ένα από τα πιο επικίνδυνα σημεία της λεωφόρου.
Ξεκίνησε να κατασκευαζεται η πρώτη σήραγγα το 1954, ενω το 1980 δόθηκε στην κυκλοφορία και η δεύτερη.
