About Varoulko Seaside Restaurant

Born in 1952 to a father who worked as a ship-chef, Lefteris Lazarou, never thought of following a different path. When he was 15, he started working with his father in ship kitchens during the summers. He travelled around many countries and worked with their national cuisine. However, working at cruise ships was where he learnt the most about cooking. Having to cook for different people daily, he had to adjust Greek cuisine to their own nutritional habits. As time went by, he decided to create a “boat” on land, a kitchen that will never get rocked by the waves. Therefore, in October 1987, he opens Varoulko where he has been creating seafood plates made entirely of ingredients he comes upon daily, as he wanders through the various markets.

These past few years, Lefteris Lazarou, has been a loyal ambassador of the Greek tastes as he has travelled to Argentina, Japan and America, as well as most of the European capitals to promote Greek olive oil through presenting the Greek cuisine. In the U.S.A, he has taught Greek cuisine in one of the most famous cooking schools, the Culinary Institute of America (CIA).

Beautiful location that makes you feel like being on an island. All time classic quality seafood from chef Lazarou. There is a parking near the restaurant.

Food was amazing! I totally recommend the place for a more fine dining experience. 4 stars because service was very good but not excellent. (And for that kind of restaurant I expected to be excellent). One more thing, the place was noisy, listening people talking instead of listening to nice songs. I wanna visit it again sometime!

You can enjoy top quality of fine dining together with professional service. Main building was renovated last year in a very cozy way. Eventhough I am still missing outside area which was on the sea with wooden deck, I can say current one matches well with their food and trend.

A culinary experience in Athens, modern Greek cuisine at it’s best. We ordered a tasting menu + oyster ceviche and wine pairing (all Greek wines), which gave us the opportunity to try more and so happy we did! Every dish was nicely presented and most importantly, delicious! Very good service, the staff was very welcoming and kind. Absolutely recommended!

Everything is very simply cooked (in an good way) and super tasty! Super affordable for a Michelin restaurant, around 120-150 per couple incl. wine. The staff is very helpful and covid measures are respected. Bonus: the great view. Overall, highly recommended.

Exceptional food, totally worthy of the michelin star. The menu is spoiling you for choice, a return is completely in order. Possibly the best culinary experience in Athens. I am only rating the food here (the environment could do with an upgrade - it is not bad but it doesn't correspond to the excellence of the food). Expensive but totally worth it, it is in fact way below average price point in its category. Fine dining at its best.

A One Michelin star restaurant. The last of the one star restaurants in Greece we haven't tried before. If you love seafood like me and my wife do, this is the place to go. This is super high quality food and nice scenery directly out to the water. Friendly staff and the best you can get in Greek wine. We ate whatever the chef wanted to serve and it was very good. Out of 10 courses we only had one course that was a little bit off.. Too salty and monotone in taste. The rest of the courses were simply spot on and so tasty. Worth every euro. We had a wine pairing that matched very well to the food and raised the bar even further. If you go to Greece I don't think you can eat better than this.

Amazing!!! I cross all of Athens in order to have dinner in Varoulko!! This is real refined food! Big thumbs up to the chef! And the staff is simply amazing: I was pregnant when I last went there for dinner, and everyone was very attentive in describing me all of the ingredients in order for me to avoid eating anything I couldn’t eat. Best restaurant! The Michelin Star is definitely deserved!
