We were a group of 9 friends and family including our 17 year old son and a friend. We stayed at Villa Emilia for a week at the end of August. The property is stunning - the reality really does match the photos. Sleek clean interior and fantastic outdoor space with a great functional bbq. The kitchen is pretty well equipped and we happily cooked dinners there several nights. That view is absolutely phenomenal. Few places you stay, however beautiful will better that view. All the bedrooms are comfortable if not enormous and 4 have en-suites. The ground floor room is slightly smaller and its bathroom is adjacent. The master bedroom is the largest, is on the top floor and has a bath rather than a shower. Kissamos is a nice local town with a bit of tourism rather than a tourist town with a few locals. I really liked this. I’d read a few reviews of the town that said its a bit underwhelming at first, but grows you. This is spot on. There’s a few nice bars and tavernas along the front and some really nice shops including butchers, a bakery, wine shop, a handful of supermarkets. The largest supermarket can be found on the way out of town heading west and has a wet fish section as well as a large butchery, a car park and is good for larger shopping expeditions. The Agora supermarket in the centre of town (on the corner of the road you turn up to the villa) is owned and run by the villa owner and is also a good place to shop. You probably need a car if only to carry you shopping. The best deal I found was with Auto Club of Chania - they provided a great service. The town is easily walkable if a bit more challenging up hill on the way back but makes a pleasant and easy evening stroll. We also arranged a chef service for dinner on one evening. I used Prive Chef Services of Chania to come out and cook for us - again a great service. Stella at Holiways was helpful and responsive. Cleaning and bed changing was provided on day 4 and the same lady turned up on check out morning. This was relaxed, pleasant and she worked around us as we packed up and left. We weren’t chased out of the villa at 11 but sat around until about 12.30 to make our way back to the airport for an afternoon flight. Worth a visit is the archaeological site at Polyrrinia and also Akropolis Taverna there. It’s about a 15 minute drive on winding but surfaced roads (follow your Googlemaps but take the road running up from the east of Kissamos not the road that passes the villa as this turns into an unmade road). Interesting site and a fab view if you climb to the top of the hill past the church. There’s also a nice shop in the village selling carved olive wood items - the owner will pour local spirit down you and be generally entertaining! We ate at the Akropolis twice - once 3 of us for lunch after exploring the site and all of us for dinner on our last evening. This is a proper family run eatery in the middle of no-where serving home grown, home cooked, fantastic food at incredibly reasonable prices. The sunset was as great as the food and the drive back in the dark, not as scary as expected! The drive from Chania airport takes about 40 minutes and most of it is along the E65 so very easy. Once in Kissamos take the road up from the Agora supermarket. Stella will send you the route but Googlemaps may try to take you up a different way which will include a steep unmade road which you will not make without a 4x4. We did this and so did the Chania chefs!
