Ήταν γόνος της ιστορικής μανιάτικης οικογένειας των Μαυρομιχαλαίων, έκτος και τελευταίος Μπέης της Μάνης, οπλαρχηγός του 1821, αναδειχθείς "αρχιστράτηγος των σπαρτιατικών δυνάμεων" και πρωθυπουργός της Ελλάδας από τη θέση του προέδρου του Εκτελεστικού Σώματος του ελληνικού κράτους. Σχεδόν πενήντα από τα μέλη της πολυάριθμης και μεγάλης επιρροής οικογένειάς του, έπεσαν στον αγώνα για την ανεξαρτησία της Ελλάδας.

Ένα πολύ ωραίο μνημείο στην κεντρική μεγάλη πλατεία της Αρεόπολης. Παρόλα αυτά ο δήμος έχει υποχρέωση να το διατηρεί σε άριστη κατάσταση καθώς ήτανε αρκετά βρώμικος ο χώρος τουλάχιστον όταν εμείς το επισκεφτήκαμε.
Petrobeis Mavromichalis (real name: Petros Mavromichalis) (Areopolis of Mani, 1765 - Athens, January 17, 1848) was a Greek chief and politician. He was a descendant of the historical Manichaean family of Mavromichalia, the sixth and last Bey of Mani, chief of 1821, elected "commander-in-chief of the Spartan forces" and prime minister of Greece from the position of president of the Executive Body of the Greek state. Nearly fifty of the members of his large and influential family fell in the struggle for the independence of Greece.

A very nice monument in the central large square of Areopolis. Nevertheless, the municipality has an obligation to keep it in excellent condition as the place was quite dirty at least when we visited it.
