★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Στον λόφο στα νότια του χωριού Κακαλέτρι έχουν βρεθεί λείψανα οχυρώσεων και οικισμού, με τους αρχαιολόγους να πιθανολογούν ότι εκεί βρισκόταν η ακρόπολη της αρχαίας Είρας, της πόλης που είχαν ιδρύσει οι επαναστατημένοι Μεσσήνιοι με αρχηγό τον Αριστομένη. Στη διάρκεια του Β’ Μεσσηνιακού πολέμου 685-668 π.Χ. έγιναν σφοδρές μάχες μεταξύ Μεσσηνίων και Σπαρτιατών με τους τελευταίους να την καταλαμβάνουν μετά από 11 χρόνια πολιορκιών.
