★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The ancient Theater of Messene is a beautifully preserved theater, and one of the most impressive historic sites of Greece, located 25 km northwest of Kalamata, at the magnificent archaeological site of ancient Messene.
The theatre was built in the 3rd century B.C. and it contains about 10,000 seats. He is considered to be one of the largest theatres of that period, and the ancestor of the colossal theatres and amphitheaters of the Roman era.
Along with the theatrical performances and the cultural events, this theater was also used as a parliament and a place of assembly for the locals ever since antiquity.
The first excavations in the site were conducted in 1895 by the archaeologist / politician Themistocles Sofoulis and they keep going also nowadays.
On every April, The International Youth Festival of Ancient Drama is held at the theater, on annual basis. This is a festival for Greek and Latin drama, either in the form of tragedy or comedy and it gather global attention.
Bottom line, the archeological site of ancient Messene is a must visit site! The entrance cost €12 and it covers also the museum.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The site is walkable but very large and spread out. Remarkable structures were hete and you can see the differences in Greek and Roman construction and the sophistocation of the building technology; as well as the destructiveness of earth quakes and invading cultures.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The theater has really good features that show how the theater looked and functioned. The sacrifice table is here, a water spring and basin to wash up afterwards and for watchers to drink from. The seats of the most important leaders are still present. The seats and the orchestra area are we'll preserved.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ This is among the very best archeology sites in Greece, it is bigger than Olympia and also better presented and a lot less crowded , here there are no big tours and you can enjoy the site in peace, you are also much more free to explore, very few cordoned off sites
