Ancient Gortys was an important Arcadian city in antiquity. According to mythology, the ancient city was built by Gortys, son of Stymfilos and great-grandson of King Arkadas. The city and the river Lousios took their name from its founder, which from ancient Gortyna until its contribution to Alfeios is called Gortynios river.
