d	dionisosb on Google ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Ο Κλείτωρ ή Κλείτωρας ήταν αρχαία Αρκαδική πόλη-κράτος. Ιδρύθηκε από Πελασγούς Πρωτοέλληνες και ήταν από τις πλουσιότερες και ισχυρότερες πόλεις της Αρκαδίας. Το όνομα της πόληςπροέρχεται από τον Κλείτωρα, γιό του Αζάνα και εγγονό του Αρκάδα, πέμπτο βασιλιά των Αρκάδων που ίδρυσε και εποίκισε την πόλη. Σύμφωνα με τον Παυσανία απείχε 60 στάδια από τις πηγές του Αροάνιου και κοντά στην πόλη περνούσε ποταμός με το όνομα Κλείτωρ. Στην πόλη υπήρχαν ιερά της Δήμητρας, της Εἰλειθυίας, του Ασκληπιού και των Διόσκουρων το οποίο ήταν έξω από την πόλη, είχε χάλκινα αγάλματα και απείχε τέσσερα στάδια από αυτή. Τριάντα στάδια από τον Κλείτωρα υπήρχε ιερό της Κορίας Αθηνάς με άγαλμά της και κάθε χρόνο προς τιμήν της γίνονταν τα Κοράσια. Ο Κλείτωρας είχε μεταλλεία χαλκού στα οποία στηριζόταν η οικονομία του και ήταν από τις πρώτες Αρκαδικές πόλεις που έκοψαν νομίσματα. Είχε συμμετάσχει στην ίδρυση της Μεγαλόπολης το 369 π.Χ με τους Κλεόλαο και Ακρίφιο. Ήταν μέλος της Αχαϊκής Συμπολιτείας και συμμετείχε σε όλες τις πολεμικές αναμετρήσεις της συμμαχίας. Το 395 μ.Χ καταστράφηκε από τον Αλάριχο. Ο Κλείτωρας είχε αναδείξει τρεις ολυμπιονίκες, τον Άλκετο στην 99η Ολυμπιάδα το 384 π.Χ. στη πυγμή παίδων, τον Κριτόδαμος στην 101η Ολυμπιάδα το 376 π.Χ. στην πυγμή παίδων και τον Κλεόμαντι στην 111η Ολυμπιάδα στο στάδιο. Η θέση της αρχαίας πόλης έχει βρεθεί αλλά δεν έχει ανασκαφεί παρότι υπάρχουν εμφανή πολλά λείψανα της αρχαίας πόλης. Βρίσκεται τρία χιλιόμετρα δυτικά του σημερινού χωριού Κλειτορία του Δήμου Καλαβρύτων. It was founded by Pelasgians of the Greeks and was one of the richest and most powerful cities of Arcadia. The name of the city comes from Klitoras, son of Azana and grandson of Arcada, the fifth king of Arcades who founded and settled the city. According to Pausanias, it was 60 steps from the sources of the Aroianos, and a river named Klitor passed through the city. In the city there were sanctuaries of Demetra, Eliethia, Asclepius and Dioskouras which was outside the city, had bronze statues and was four steps away from it. Thirty stages from Klitora there was a sanctuary of Koria Athena with its statue and every year in honor of it Korasia was held. Clitoras had copper mines on which to base his economy and was one of the first Arcadian cities to cut coins. He had participated in the founding of Megalopolis in 369 BC with Cleolaos and Akriphos. He was a member of the Achaemenid Confederation and participated in all the fighting in the Alliance. In 395 AD it was destroyed by the Alaricus. The site of the ancient city has been found but not excavated although there are many visible remains of the ancient city. It is located three kilometers west of the present village of Klitoria in the municipality of Kalavrita. N	Nick “Nikos” Papastamatiou on Google ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Beautiful site. Really enjoyed nature. The ancient ruins are at the top of the nearby mount. Klitor was destroyed AD for not giving up on the old religion from what I've read. It hasn't being excavated so you may have to do some searching, even some bush uprooting! The locals know where it is so if you find any you can ask them. That's how I found it since it was marked wrong. There are herds of sheep around the area so get a baton in case you run into dogs.
