There’s some masterpieces of Byzantine art here, no doubt, but also remember that these images were the focus of adoration and veneration for thousands of people over hundreds of years. They represents so much more than just art. The experience of getting up close to the icons and being able to see the brush strokes, the imperfections and the general wear and tear is something you don’t often get in an art gallery. The collection is thoughtfully presented in three halls and includes an enlightening video presentation showing a contemporary artist producing an icon using traditional methods.
