A magnificent 11th century AD Byzantine Church (1028 according to the sign above the entrance) built entirely by red bricks! Do not hesitate to visit even during the early evening when Father Nektarios conducts the Night Service.

This church dates back to the early 11th century and is simply beautiful. Its name means "The Church of the Virgin of the Coppersmiths" because the area was once the centre for the city's coppersmith artisans and it was those businesses that paid for the building of the church. It is thought that the church was built on the site of where an ancient Greek temple once stood. The minute you enter into the lobby area you are hit by the very strong atmosphere of the space, which was added to, on the day we visited, by a powerful aroma of incense. The main body of the church is very small but the walls are just packed with gorgeous frescoes and iconography. The dome seems like a bright bowl, way above your head due to its height and the way it's lit by natural light from small windows versus the small and very dark floor area. It is a wonderfully peaceful place to spend time and reflect. Additionally, the gardens outside add a lovely feeling of freshness to the area.

[December 2019] Beautiful Byzantine church, built at 1028. This chirch is also known as All Holy Virgin of the Coppersmiths. It is cross-domed churc named for nearby copper workers shops. According to an inscription on the marbel lintel above the west entrance it was built by a high Byzantine court dignitary named Christophoros who is likely buried in the northern wall. Recommend!
