G	G. Pap. on Google ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Κατά τους προϊστορικούς χρόνους τα όρη Αράκυνθος και Παναιτωλικό περιόριζαν τα νερά του ποταμού Αχελώου να καταλήξουν στην θάλασσα και σχημάτιζαν έτσι μια μεγάλη λίμνη. Το νερό έπειτα διερχόταν από το φαράγγι της Κλεισούρας και χύνονταν στην λιμνοθάλασσα του Αιτωλικού. Με την πάροδο των αιώνων και ύστερα από γεωλογικές ανακατατάξεις στην περιοχή, ο ποταμός άλλαξε πορεία με αποτέλεσμα το φαράγγι της Κλεισούρας να γίνει μια ξερή κοίτη και η μεγάλη λίμνη να περιοριστεί σε έκταση, σχηματίζοντας, προς την έξοδό του, τις υπάρχουσες λίμνες της Τριχωνίδας, του Οζερού, της Αμβρακίας και της Λυσιμαχίας. Στην ίδια κατεύθυνση βρισκόταν η αρχαία αιτωλική πόλη Πυλήνη, την οποία όπως αναφέρει ο Στράβωνας μεταφέρθηκε στη βόρεια πλευρά του Αράκυνθου κοντά στο μοναστήρι του Αγίου Γεωργίου και την μετονόμασαν σε Πρόσχιον, ενώ στη δυτική πλευρά του φαραγγιού βρίσκεται η εκκλησία της Ζωοδόχου Πηγής ή Αγία Ελεούσα Αιτωλοακαρνανίας[1][2]. In prehistoric times the mountains Arakynthos and Panaitoliko limited the waters of the river Acheloos to reach the sea and thus formed a large lake. The water then passed through the gorge of Kleisoura and poured into the lagoon of Aetoliko. Over the centuries and after geological rearrangements in the area, the river changed course with the result that the gorge of Kleisoura became a dry riverbed and the large lake was limited in size, forming, towards its exit, the existing lakes of Trichonida, of Ozeros, Amvrakia and Lysimachia. In the same direction was the ancient Aetolian city of Pylini, which according to Strabo was transferred to the north side of Arakynthos near the monastery of Agios Georgios and was renamed Proshion, while on the west side of the gorge is the church of Zoodochos Aigo [1] [2].
