★ ★ ★ ★ ★ It was built in 1668-1670 and is located in the northern part of the Roman Agora, near the Tower of the Winds, built on the ruins of a three-aisled basilica of the Middle Byzantine period. During the Ottoman domination, it was known as "the mosque of the Starposar". Since 1834, when Athens became the capital of the Greek state and until the first decades of the 20th century it was used as a military bakery. Since then it has been used mainly as an archaeological warehouse for the various finds of the excavations of the Agora and the Acropolis. Due to the abundance of available building material at the time of its erection, it incorporates architectural members of the classical and Byzantine years,
including Ionic capitals of the ancient era.
With the exception of the removal of the latest architectural interventions and its return to its original condition in 1935, the mosque had never undergone a complete renovation, and in 2010 it had serious static problems. In the fall of 2010, the Ministry of Culture decided to empty the building from the various antiquities that were stored there, as well as the commencement of a renovation process that was completed in 2017. The monument today is open to visitors and also serves as a showroom.
