The sweetest most cost secluded and compact gorge you find in greece. A piece of the puzzle that makes Zarros an amazing paradise

A bit challenging for inexperienced hikers. But views are astonishing.

We initially wanted to do the Kamares village to Kamares Cave hike but realised that it was longer than our guide book suggested. Instead we did this hike along the Rouvas gorge which was very nice indeed. Walking through this canyon offers picturesque sights and the whole place has a pleasant perfume of thyme and pine trees.

Excellent hike if you are healthy and nimble and a challenge if you have weak ankles, weak knees, and a bad hip. Trail is not maintained and fences and handholds are not reliable, but this is typical in this landscape. Trails subject to being cut or filled by gravel during rainstorms. Not for the faint-hearted. The connection to the monastery best reflects Dante’s admonition: lasciate ogni speranza, voi ch'entrate. Presumably the monks do not welcome hikers around their territory as the trail signs direct one not along the easier switchbacks but instead up tortuous shortcuts. Altogether a spectacular hike. Take water if its hot.

One of the most beautiful gorges i visited in crete. One of the more difficult routes, though - you'll need good shoes and some stamina. about five kilometers does not sound much, but you climb up to about 990 meters, and then you have to go back again. Some parts of the route are besides quite deep cliffs, being cool with heigths definitely comes in handy here. Take water with you (1, 1.5l pP recommended, especially in the hot season), and some snacks. But great, changing landscapes, from the cultivated monastery area through steep and stony gorge parts up to the high oak wood, all with great views are well worth it. Atop, there is a small church and - at our time of visit - a closed mountain house. Though the way back down is easier and quicker than up, you need to stay focused. We met a pair where the guy stumbeled on the last two kilometers and had quite a hard time getting back down. So watch your steps, and stand still to look and take photos.

We came here a bit late in the day and without proper walking shoes and with children and had to turn back. You need about 5 hours here and it best suits real walkers.

Even in December a great experience. I definitely want to come back in summer! Not too hard and not too easy to hike / climb the well marked paths, however you definitely need to be careful in a few spots.
