R	RodDeeRoads on Google ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Try not to miss this little gem. It's easy to find. If you are facing the front of the Hagia Sophia at street level, look to the right... at about "2 o'clock". You'll see some trees. That's it. But it's 5 metres below ground-level...!! It was part of a monastery dedicated to St John the Baptist. However, prior to becoming a monastery church, it is thought to have been a site of pagan worship and then, in Roman times, to have been part of their aqueduct system. It is small, simple, reflective and wonderful... and don't miss the underground tunnels. There is some info in English.

And how many even know that the enclosure of this church you know is well hidden from the chaos of the streets is a small oasis of greenery in the city center? Some will have already figured out that I am referring to the Holy Temple of the Forerunner, a cultural treasure where the remnants of the city's history are beautifully intertwined with the possibilities of modern architecture.This sacred temple is, therefore, located on the southeast side of the Church of Hagia Sophia and specifically on Iktinou and Makenzy King streets. It is an excellent building made of glass and greenery. Inside it are the catacombs of Agios Ioannis, an immaculately maintained and fully restored space that remains to witness Thessaloniki's past.
F	Ferenc Csonka on Google ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Historical church, unique of it's kind. There's a stairway leading to the catacomb which is even more interesting in my opinion. The place also has a nice, calming garden which is perfect to sit back a relax for a moment in a tranquil environment.

Beautiful environment and peaceful underground place with holly water. Across the church of Agia Sofia, this is absolutely must visit istorical monument, as for the foreigners, same way and for the locals and Greeks.
L	Laura Davideanu on Google ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ THE CHURCH OF SAINT JOHN PRODROMOS («CATACOMBS») On the southern side and at a much lower level, within the complex of Saint Sophia’s Cathedral, there are three other sites that may be of interest to the visitors: A. A paleochristian baptistery, also called nymphaion, B. A mosaic section, which can be found inside the current church, and C. The underground gallery, known as the Catacombs or The Holy Water of Saint John the Baptist. Prior to the erection of any Christian building, there was an extensive thermal bath complex. Later, this space was converted a place of worship for Christians. Around 1940, during the remodelling of Makenzie King Street, a chapel dedicated to Saint John the Baptist was repaired because of the immense importance of the baptistery discovered there In 1990, with the approval of the Byzantine Antiquities Control Committee, this small church was extended, a small courtyard with 44 seats was erected and a glass structure installed over the entire southern side, to allow for the abundant penetration of sunlight.
