An architectural gem in the center of Thessaloniki !!! Flooded with the holiness of our Lord !!!! Excellent priests and staff. Worth visiting.

Ο ρυθμός της, Βασιλική χωρίς τρούλο, λίγο κάτω από το επίπεδο της Εγνατίας οδού, απλή απέριττη και όμορφη. Το εσωτερικό της δεν είναι εικονογραφημένο αλλά έχει τους τείχους της στολισμένους με κρεμασμένες εικόνες. I visited this temple for the first time on the occasion of a baptism in the spring of 2021. Its rhythm, Vassiliki without a dome, just below the level of the Egnatia Odos, simple and simple. Its interior is not illustrated but has its walls decorated with hanging images.

Στην γενικότερη κακή περιβαλλουσα εικόνα προστίθεται εδώ και δεκαετίες ένα μισό τελειωμένο και παρατημένο στα μπετά καμπαναριό πίσω από το ιερό του ναού. Όλα αυτά σε συνδιασμο με το γεγονός ότι ο ναός βρίσκεται κάτω από το επίπεδο της Εγνατίας οδού υποβιβαζουν το μνημείο. The temple is unfortunately overshadowed by the neighboring ungrateful tall buildings. To the general bad surrounding image is added for decades a half finished and abandoned concrete bell tower behind the sanctuary of the temple. All this in combination with the fact that the church is below the level of the Egnatia Highway degrades the monument.

Η Εκκλησία τού Αγίου Αθανασίου στην Εγνατία . Ένα από τα τραγικά γεγονότα της Ελληνικής επανάστασης στην Θεσσαλονίκη πού παραμείνει άγνωστο στη συλλογική μνήμη τής πόλης. Οι Τούρκοι σαν αντίποινα ειχαν φυλακίσει πολλούς Έλληνες μέσα στην εκκλησία .οι περισσότεροι ήταν γριές γέροντες και παιδιά. Τους άφησαν φυλακισμένους χωρίς τροφή και νερό ,και ύστερα από σαράντα ημέρες άνοιξαν τις πόρτες ,βρέθηκαν μπρός σε ένα φοβερό θέαμα . Καμία εκατοστή πτώματα αποσυνθεμενα και καταφαγωμενα από τα ποντίκια ήτα ξαπλωμένα πάνω στις πλάκες τής Εκκλησίας , Τέτοια ήταν η δυσοσμία σε όλη τη συνοικία ώστε οι κάτοικοι τής περιοχής αναγκάστηκαν να φύγουν από τα σπίτια τους για μερικές μέρες. Τής πρώτες ημέρες της επανάστασης έχασαν τη ζωή τους περισσότεροι από 3.000 Έλληνες από Θεσσαλονικη , Χαλικιδιδική και Μακεδονία γενικότερα. Every Summer (July-September, every Wednesday at 10:00 am) I make absolutely FREE (without expecting any tips) guided tours in English! I explain the history of our church, the Greek way of life during the Ottoman domination, the parts of an Orthodox church building, our church art, the various symbolisms and some things about the Byzantine music, which is used in our services! At the same time tourists have the opportunity to listen to serene and angelic Byzantine church music records from the loudspeakers! We walk around the church, approach the iconostasis, admire its beautiful icons and wood carving, visit the chapel of St. Nektarios in the northern part of the church and go upstairs to the gallery for a panoramic view! You will find me on the left of the entrance of the main church. Some Wednesdays there might be no guided tours. For the upcoming summer (2020) I plan to make an extra tour also at 10:30 am on Wednesdays (except the regular one at 10:00 am). Check for announcements hanged outside the church.
