The saint who was believed to heal the mad. Close to Hippodrome Square. Old church hidden between apartment blocks.

The church of Agios Antonios is located in the eastern part of the old city of Thessaloniki, at the corner of D. Margaritis and Friendly Society streets, very close to Hippodrome Square, which was the nucleus of the city's Hellenism during the Turkish occupation. The church of Agios Antonios is a later building, dating from the second half of the 19th century and is a typical example of a "double" tiled basilica with a gallery, which is unfortunately not preserved today. The small temple, which was accompanied by a series of buildings, was part of the old church of Agios Konstantinos in the current square of Hippodrome and was demolished to replace a new temple. The eastern side of the church of Agios Antonios rested on the walls of the area that were demolished shortly afterwards. There is still evidence that there was an ancient building, probably a chapel, that was used as a place of worship. Saint Anthony also functioned in Thessaloniki as the patron saint of the mentally ill, as the Christian tradition calls him. In fact, iron chalks were found in the temple with which the patients were bound in the hope and faith that the Saint would heal them.

We spent the Resurrection there! An atmospheric church of 1800 in the city center with guarded relics of Orthodoxy!

I.N. Agios Antonios (D. Margaritis & Fil. Company) Manufactured between 1750-1800. A small double-storey temple with features of a tiled basilica, with arcades - an exterior and an underground one, which do not exist today. The northeast side rested on the east wall of the city (later demolished). There is also an ancient building in the courtyard, probably a place of worship. Only the wooden painted iconostasis survived inside. Also found in the temple were iron chalices that bind the patients (from 7 to 40 days) in the hope that the Saint would heal them - there are still links in the iconostasis. It was an annex to the old church of Saint Constantine, which was demolished, where today it is located by I.N. Konstantinou & Helen (Hippodrome Square) - and say that small buildings connected the two churches (therapeutic and hospitality areas for the faithful patients) and an underground arcade. During the Ottoman domination constituted the core of the city Hellenism: why its reputation as the St. Anthony is patron of '' mad '', was a threat to the Turks and fear did not dare to approach him. Today it is Metochi of the Holy Virgin Theodora (Ermou street), and is dedicated to Saint Anthony the Great and Saint Anthony (local Saint of Veria).

A sacred place of prayer Old relics of the Orthodox faith are kept in the church It used to be part of a holy monastery but today it is a parish church that is a bit like a village church.
