 Old Church, with incredible frescoes, quiet during the Divine Liturgy. It exudes calm.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Ο Ναός ιδρύθηκε το 1845 επί Βασιλείας Όθωνος, Πρίγκηπος του Βασιλικού Βαυβαρικού Οίκου των Wittelsbach. Ο Ναός ανεγέρθη στο σημείο που παλαιότερα υπήρχε ναός που κατεδαφίσθηκε από άγνωστη αιτία. Ήταν ήδη ενοριακός πρίν τη μεταφορά της πρωτεύουσας της Ελλάδος απο το Ναύπλιο στην Αθήνα (1834). Για ένα χρονικό διάστημα χρησιμοποιήθηκε ώς καθεδρικός, πρίν ονομασθή μετά η Αγία Ειρήνη της οδού Αιόλου..
Ο ναός είναι αντιπροσωπευτικό δείγμα της νεοελληνικής εκκλησιαστικής αρχιτεκτονικής των μέσων του 19ου αιώνα. Είναι ρυθμού σταυρεπίστεγου μετά τρούλου.
The church was founded in 1845 by King Otto, Prince of the Royal Bavarian House of Wittelsbach. The Temple was built on the site of a former temple that was demolished for unknown reasons. It was already a parish before the transfer of the capital of Greece from Nafplio to Athens (1834). For a while it was used as a cathedral, before Agia Irini of Aiolou Street was named after it.
The church is a representative example of the modern Greek ecclesiastical architecture of the middle of the 19th century. It has the style of a cross-roof after a dome.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ An amazing church in the heart of Athens. A look inside and it looks no different to most other churches in the city with the elegant decor, pictures and attributes to the Holy Father etc, however take a closer look. Towards the altar a controversial image of Jesus Christ and Mary in black. Ask the curator for the story, it is fascinating. The church is going through various stages of renovation with some parts being restored, mainly the lower floor area, however if you are allowed take a walk upstairs, it may look dark & dingy and that is because over the centuries the soot from candles has settled on the walls giving them a dark look. You will see in various places where items have been removed from the walls to reveal the actual colour and again it is fascinating. Well worth a look in and the curator is a lovely guy.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Some of the finest metal 'Oklad' covers I've seen. These are the sculpted metal covers of icons, usually in silver, brass, tin or gold. Also called 'Riza', the Greeks call them επένδυση . The shimmering metal gives this church a very mystical feel.
