Die Pläne der Kirche sollen von dem Architekten Dimitrios Zezos, stammen der als der Begründer des "griechisch-byzantinischen" Baustils gilt. Die Grundmauern der Kirche wurden 1863 errichtet, aber erst 1892 wurde die Kirche, aufgrund der enormen Kosten für diese Zeit, fertiggestellt.
Die Inneneinrichtung der Kirche wurde ebenfalls erst 1892, von berühmten Künstlern dieses Zeit, fertiggestellt. und von berühmten Künstlern aus dieser Zeit angefertigt. Der Namenstag und die offizielle Feier findet stets am 15. August statt.
Panagia Chrysospiliotissa Church is one of the most famous churches in Athens.
