Στη θέση «Σύμποδα» μπροστά στη νέα μεγάλη εκκλησία «Η Κοίμησις της Θεοτόκου ή «Αγ. Βαρβάρα» των Πάνω Μπουλαριών, βρίσκεται το ερείπιο του ‘Αη-Νικόλα. Πρόκειται για το χάλασμα μιας μεσαιωνικής εκκλησίας του χώρου μεγάλων διαστάσεων, απ’ ό,τι φαίνεται. Πρέπει να υποθέσουμε βάσιμα ότι είταν το «καθολικό, προφανώς, του μεσαιωνικού οικισμού που υπήρχε γύρωθε και προς την πλαγιά. Ο καθηγ. Δρανδάκης που έκανε μία σύντομη ανασκαφή και απεκάλυψε τα θεμέλια του ανατολικού τοίχου (προς το αλώνι του Λαουλάκου), αποφαίνεται πως πρόκειται για αξιόλογο χτίσμα, όμως η καταστροφή του μνημείου είναι ολοσχερής και δεν επιδέχεται, όπως είναι φανερό, καμιά αναστήλωση. Παραμένει όρθιος, καταφαγωμένος απ’τα δρολάπια ο τριγωνικός ΒΑ τοίχος του Ιερού με τις δύο κόχες, όπου διακρίνονται ίχνη τοιχογραφιών σημαντικής καλλιτεχνικής αξίας. Τα ίχνη όμως αυτά που απομείνανε είναι ελάχιστα δείγματα και δε βοηθάνε να κάνουμε πλήρη αξιολόγηση του μνημείου και εσωτερικά (τοιχογραφίες) και εξωτερικά στο αρχιτεκτονικό του σύνολο. Ο καθηγ. Ν. Δρανδάκης που το μελέτησε, κι έκανε ανασκαφική έρευνα, στο χώρο, έγραψε: «Ερείπιον ναϊσκου του Αγίου Νικολάου, Ν.Α της κυρίας εκκλησίας του χωριού Επάνω Μπουλαριοί, αφιερωμένης εις την Κοίμησιν της Θεοτόκου. Σώζεται ο Α. τοίχος επικεχωσμένος από Ανατολών. Εχει κτισθεί δια μικρών λίθων συνδεδεμένων με πηλόν κατά τους αρμούς. Ίσως περιέβαλλεν εξωτερικώς τας δυο κόγχας ενιαία αψίς. Επί της Β. κόγχης λείψανα βυζαντινών τοιχογραφιών (13ου αιώνα). Κατά το αριστερόν της ήμισυ μετωπικός Αρχάγγελος και κατά το άλλο Βρεφοκρατούσα με το παιδίον προ του μέσου του στήθους» Επίσης ο ίδιος καθηγ. σε σχέση με τις τοιχογραφίες του ‘Αη-Νικόλα , γράφει το πάρα κάτου: « Λείψανα Πλατυτέρας εν προτομή διακρίνονται και εις αψίδα του ναού ‘Αγιος Γεώργιος Κάτω Μπουλαριων και εις εναπομένουσαν κόγχην εκ του ναού του Αγίου Νικολάου παρά την νεωτέραν εκκλησίαν της Κοιμήσεως εις ‘Ανω Μπουλαριούς». Η υπηρεσία Βυζαντ. Αρχαιοτήτων, του ‘Αρμόδιου Υπουργείου, το έχει ανακηρύξει διατηρητέο κι έχει τοποθετήσει τη σχετική πινακίδα. Η γνώμη μου, είναι πως ήταν έργο-μνημείο αξιόλογο για το χώρο, προτού καταρρεύσει και λεηλατηθεί. Νομίζω πως δεν πρέπει να είναι νεώτερο από τον 10ο αιώνα. Γ.Λ.ΜΑΝΤΟΥΒΑΛΟΣ
