If you go to Kalamata you should definitely make a point of seeing the castle or what is left of it after centuries of battles it's a ruin but embedded in history so don't expect to much. And after the earthquake in 1986. Fantastic veiws and very cheap entrance fees.

Very historic Castle! It has been a major feature in battles with the Byzantines, ottomans, venicians, slaves, and later Frank's. Do not miss the sign in front with short historical description. Also, note the renovations. By the Venetians and Greeks after theTurks blew up the cannon powder storage magazines. The older stonework is still visible

The view from the Castle is really amazing. I highly recommend you check it out. It was quite hard to find but once you get there it's totally worth it. Students have free access.

We drove there from Athens. Beautiful mountain scenery the whole way. Good wide motorway. The castle isn't much to see but from the top you have nice view of city. The city had a pedestrian street with shopping and cafes. Easy nice break from Athens

It's not much to be honest, you pay 3 euros even if you are student because you are foreigner. It's rather small and you can see it all in 10 minutes for sure. There is, however, beautiful view on whole Kalamata. There is also small summer theater in the side.

I always loved Kalamata’s medieval castle! You can explore all its corners and it offers amazing views to the city. Let alone there are often beautiful kittens living within its centuries-old walls! The adult ticket in summer costs 3 euros. Combine it with a walk in the old town below.

The castle is located in the northwestern part of the city of Kalamata, on a low rocky hill above the river Nedontas. Its foundation dates back to the Byzantine period, but its current form is due to a large reconstruction by a Frankish prince. It is small in size but the visitor will be compensated with the panoramic images he will see inside and outside the castle during his tour.
