★ ★ ★ ★ ★ A recent holiday in Crete, Heraklion as our base. We came across this place on Day 1 and ate there at least 5 times. The food is generous and tasty (Minoan pork is very, very good) and the staff are friendly and attentive. We were looking for nice places to eat as an important part of our visit, so it's quite a testament that we went here more than any other place.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Mare is a really pretty spot, ideal for watching the sunset and enjoying the sea view. I’ve tried a number of dishes here over the last few months, club sandwiches, charcuterie, breakfast, vegan burgers, eggs benedict… I would say some dishes are really tasty and beautifully presented (like the club sandwich and charcuterie) while others (vegan burger and breakfast) are average. I find the service to be ok, nothing specifically negative to say, but nothing particularly positive either. I do feel that the service in general could be a point for improvement.
I’m leaving 4* because overall the location is really lovely and there is a lot of choice when it comes to food and drinks. When you choose more touristy spots it’s normal for food to be a little more average, so it doesn’t seem fair to leave a lower score especially when I’d happily come back myself and also with friends/family.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ After a week in Crete and all the delicious meals, We finished off our last night at Mare Coffee Bar and food. As always the ambience, atmosphere and scenic setting was just amazing. The servers were very welcoming and attentive. The only disappointing part was the food… after eating and relishing squid and octopus pretty much every where in Crete, we ordered the same and were terrible disappointed. The quantity was a shame and so was the quality. The main dish of squid that I took was hard and chewy. My friend had taken octopus and it was the same, hard, chewy and not well seasoned! And it was very, very expensive compared to the quality and quantity! I don’t know if we were unlucky with our dishes or the food in general is bad?
