Just three kilometers outside of Kavala, following the national road, exactly where it joins the surviving sections of the old and historic Egnatia Highway, is the Holy Monastery of St. Apostle Silas, who as a disciple of Christ from the Seventy, accompanied the Apostle Paul, when they first went to European territory, to teach the Philippians. Right from the point where the monastery is located, the view of Kavala and Thassos is wonderful. This picturesque area, surrounded by a magnificent rich greenery, was not chosen at random for the construction of the monastery. According to tradition, Apostolos Pavlos and his associates Agios Silas, Timotheos and Loukas sat down to rest at this point, while in the monastery there is a marble column that mentions the event. After the liberation of Kavala and with the participation of all the people of Kavalia, during the year 1926 the construction of a temple was completed in honor of St. Paul and then, in 1937, the construction of the second monument was put into operation, the church in honor of St. Apostle Silas. In 1946 the church of Agios Silas, after being destroyed by the Bulgarians during the Occupation, was converted into a monastery. 1956 is the next stop in the life of the monastery. At the initiative of the blessed Metropolitan Philippos Chrysostomos and the thousands of tobacco workers, a fundraiser begins through a lottery for the monastery and the buildings are built. Today it is a men's monastery, which belongs to the Holy Diocese of Philippi. The pilgrimage to the monastery is perfectly combined with a visit to the Archaeological site of Philippi, north of Kavala, where the Apostle Paul taught (and was imprisoned together with the Apostle Silas) and at the same time baptized the first Christian in Europe, St. Lydia. The feast of St. Silas and the feast at the monastery take place on July 30.

Next to the ancient Egnatia Road and one of the tallest and most beautiful sites a few kilometers outside the city of Kavala has been built the Holy Monastery of St. Silas. Saint Silas was a disciple of the Apostle Paul and on a tour of them died in the area. In honor of this monastery was built. In the same area there is a monument that mentions the above event, the tomb of the Metropolitan of Prokopios, a chapel dedicated to Saint Anthimos and a small zoo. The monastery celebrates July 30, Saint Silas Day, and September 3 commemorates St. Anthimos.

Monastery with history since the location was in antiquity a passage to Philippi. Small catholic but beautiful. Weddings, baptisms take place and Greeks and foreigners visit it.
