Wonderful monastery with great view to Arahthos river and Ioannina. Also the trip there is amazing as passing through the Ellinika village you will see left and right art exhibit from the modern art museum of Papagiannis. Don't forget to visit the museum also.

You will be amazed by the beauty and historical information about the 12th century monastery, and the spectacular view to Arachthos river and the mountains around. You will enjoy a conversation with the monks who will inform you about the history of the monastery. On your way up there you'll be also attracted by Papagiannis's sculptures, located on both sides of the road.

The Tsoukas Monastery, dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin, is located on the homonymous hill, at an altitude of 760 meters, near the village of Elliniko in the Katsanohoria Municipal Unity. According to tradition, the monastery was founded in 1190 by Emperor Isaac II Angelus, destroyed in 1736 and renovated in 1779. The Tsoukas Monastery is the largest pilgrimage of the prefecture of Ioannina and its feast on September 8 gathers a considerable number of pilgrims. He met great prosperity at the time of the Despotate of Epirus and became a religious and national center (in 1821 and in all the national struggles, he was a refuge of the revolutionary ragas). Tradition says that a picture of the Virgin Mary was found on the Tsouka rock and the Lozetsans, the inhabitants of Elliniko, built a small church on the hill of Ag. Marina and placed it inside. The image, however, was transported to Tsouka every night, thus indicating the location of the monastery's erection. It took its name from the top of the hill that is built, as "Chuka Antalta" in the Vlach means "high peak".

Nothing so special about the monastery itself. A clean, tidy courtyard with a small church inside with a very old wood carved temple. The real magic comes with the breathtaking view of the Arachthos gorge and the cantilever balconies destined for the brave at heart visitors who don’t mind hanging over hundreds of meters above the canyon to enjoy the magnificent view.
