★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Η Ιερά Μονή Παναγίας Κάτω Ξενιάς, που βρίσκεται σε απόσταση 16 χιλιομέτρων από την πόλη του Αλμυρού, είναι κτισμένη σε ένα μικρό οροπέδιο με πλούσια βλάστηση και άφθονα νερά.
Η ακριβής χρονολογία ιδρύσεως είναι άγνωστη. Από τα εντοιχισμένα ανάγλυφα που βρίσκονται στην κόγχη του Ιερού, συμπεραίνουμε ότι ιδρύθηκε περί τον 12ο και 13ο αιώνα και αποτελούσε αρχικά μετόχι της Άνω Μονής Ξενιάς, αφιερωμένο στον Άγιο Νικόλαο.
Άρρηκτα συνδεδεμένη με τις δύο Ιερές Μονές είναι η θαυματουργός Εικόνα της Παναγίας Ξενιάς, η οποία αποτελεί την έφορο, την προστάτιδα και καταφυγή όλων των πιστών της περιοχής. Οι ιστορικές συγκυρίες και οι διάφορες ανάγκες, επέβαλλαν στους μοναχούς να αρχίσουν περί το 1704 να μεταφέρονται και να εγκαθίστανται στο μετόχι του Αγίου Νικολάου, φέροντας μαζί τους τα Ιερά Κειμήλια και την θαυματουργό Εικόνα της Παναγίας Ξενιάς.
Με την πάροδο του χρόνου, το μετόχι γνώρισε μεγάλη πνευματική και οικονομική άνθιση και με την ονομασία «Κάτω Μονή Ξενιάς» αντικατέστησε την κυρίαρχο Άνω Μονή, η οποία έπεσε σε παρακμή. Μεγάλη υπήρξε η προσφορά της Ιεράς Μονής, τόσο η πνευματική όσο και η κοινωνική, κατά τους αγώνες για την απελευθέρωση από τους Τούρκους και κατά τους πρόσφατους Εθνικούς αγώνες.
Η Ιερά Μονή λειτουργούσε έως το 1970 ως ανδρώα, έκτοτε μετατράπηκε σε γυναικεία και παραμένει έως σήμερα.
Το 1980 καταστράφηκε από τον τοπικό σεισμό, με αποτέλεσμα η νέα Μονή να αρχίσει να κτίζεται σε μικρή απόσταση από την Παλαιά επάνω στον λόφο «Καστρούλι». Το 1990 έγιναν τα θυρανοίξια της Νέας Ιεράς Μονής και το 2001 τα εγκαίνια του Ιερού Ναού, ενώ συνεχίζονται οι εργασίες αποπερατώσεως του κτηριακού συγκροτήματος τής Νέας Μονής. Η Ιερά Μονή πανηγυρίζει την 23η Αυγούστου και η θαυματουργή Χάρη της Παναγίας προσελκύει πλήθος πιστών από τις πλησιέστερες περιοχές και τον ευρύτερο Ελλαδικό χώρο. Ηγουμένη είναι η Νυμφοδώρα Κουριώτου και η αδελφότητα αριθμεί 5 μοναχές.
The Holy Monastery of Panagia Kato Xenia, located 16 km from the town of Almyros, is built on a small plateau with lush vegetation and plenty of water.
The exact date of establishment is unknown. From the wall reliefs located in the niche of the sanctuary, we conclude that it was founded around the 12th and 13th century and was originally a part of the Upper Monastery of Xenia, dedicated to Agios Nikolaos.
Inextricably linked to the two Holy Monasteries is the miraculous Icon of Panagia Xenia, which is the curator, protector and refuge of all the faithful of the area. Historical circumstances and various needs, forced the monks to begin around 1704 to be transported and settled in the metochi of Agios Nikolaos, bringing with them the Holy Relics and the miraculous Icon of Panagia Xenia.
Over time, the metochi experienced great spiritual and economic prosperity and with the name "Kato Moni Xenias" replaced the dominant Ano Moni, which fell into decline. The contribution of the Holy Monastery was great, both the spiritual and the social, during the struggles for liberation from the Turks and during the recent National struggles.
The Holy Monastery operated until 1970 as a man, since then it has been transformed into a women's monastery and remains to this day.
In 1980 it was destroyed by the local earthquake, with the result that the new Monastery began to be built a short distance from the Old one on the hill "Kastrouli". In 1990 the doors of the New Holy Monastery were opened and in 2001 the inauguration of the Holy Temple, while the finishing works of the building complex of the New Monastery continue. The Holy Monastery celebrates on the 23rd of August and the miraculous Grace of the Virgin Mary attracts a large number of believers from the nearest areas and the wider Greek area. The abbot is Nymfodora Kouriotou and the fraternity numbers 5 nuns.
