★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The famous Byzantine monastery of St. Nicholas was founded by the noble Byzantine family of Filanthropini (Filanthropinon in genitive). The surrounding walls survive to our days, probably restored. One can admire the important frescoes of the main church, excellent examples of the post-byzantine art. A friendly monk might guide you while keeping an eye on you. A universal monument that anyone able should visit.
