Moni Preveli is set in a striking location perched above the Libyan Sea. If you travelled to the beautiful seaside setting of Palm Tree Beach then worthwhile making the 10 minute trip to the Monastery at the end of the road. Tip. There are refreshments and clean toilets here.

A beautifull old monastery. Decent closthing is advised, they have scarves at the entrance though. It has a beautifull garden with various animals and a large number of cats. It closes in the afternoon for resting period.

I think as a family we visit here every time we visit Crete. It draws us back time and time again, and to be honest I have absolutely no idea why this is. Yes, it's a wonderful location looking out over the sea from its hillside location, and yes the history is fascinating too, but as with many heritage or historical sites, when you've been once, and thoroughly explored it, you tend not to return without very good reason. Well whatever that reason is, Preveli never fails but to draw us back. The spirituality of the place is almost tangible and I always feel at peace when I leave its doors. We've always previously visited in October when it tends to be much quieter, however I'm led to understand that in the peak months it can become very busy indeed.

The monastery is definitely worth a visit if you are in this part of Crete. It is located a few kilometers from the famous beach Preveli. As is well known, the monastery was completely destroyed several times in a turbulent history and consequently in a strategic position. Nevertheless, it offers an insight into typical local architecture and local spirit. An interesting interpretation of the architecture and the chosen environment. Within the monastery there is also a small animal shelter where it is possible to see South American llamas (or guanacos because the distance did not allow a precise definition), there are some free-walking peacocks, we see ducks, geese, guinea fowl, even canary habitats. The smaller museum offers an insight into the most important highlights of the monastery (and its surroundings). Photography is prohibited in the museum. Free large parking.

Definitely worth a visit if you plan a trip to this part of the island, can easily be combined with a bit of sunbathing on the Preveli beach. If time is an issue, spend some time at the monastery though. Secluded and atmospheric, with links to not so distant past events.
