A nice monastery with quite some interesting history. Lot of tourists, but we were lucky and one of the monks (there are only 3 left) took his time for my Russian-Orthodox wife, to let her kiss the special holy Cross, praying and blessing her. A great spiritual gift! There are some animals on the area, but you can watch them only from afar. Outside you can visit a little taverna which also sells souvenirs for good prices.

It's the village that is such a nice surprise nested next to some amazing mountains, with a beautiful monastery on the edge of town.

Strange visit. Small museum. I am not sure if all exposured are authentic. Lack of detailed explanation. The monastery is well situated. If you have visited Mont Sainte Odile or Mont Saint Michel, it can never be compared with. The chapel can be visited if opened. When our group was there, the orthodoxe priest behaved in a very very very strange manner: he turned on the vacuum cleaner. It was so noisy that I had the impression we were disturbing him. The tour had been programmed in advance. He surely knew that we would be there. He should have cleaned the chapel before or after. He looked at us dully without moving any muscles on his face and most of the visitors preferred going out. He won. Knowing from the tour guide that the priests get their salary from government. Maybe when he had to earn his living by himself, he would learn first to be polite.

Quite the nice monastery in the south of Crete. You don't have to pay entrance but can pay a small 3€ fee for the restoration of the monastery. Inside you get a nice view of the monastery itself, plus a small museum showing relics from the past. It's also interesting to see if you're not totally into religion etc. You can spend a good 30-45 minutes there and additionally enjoy a nice view over the coast and ocean.

The monastery is definitely worth a visit if you are in this part of Crete. It is located a few kilometers from the famous beach Preveli. As is well known, the monastery was completely destroyed several times in a turbulent history and consequently in a strategic position. Nevertheless, it offers an insight into typical local architecture and local spirit. An interesting interpretation of the architecture and the chosen environment. Within the monastery there is also a small animal shelter where it is possible to see South American llamas (or guanacos because the distance did not allow a precise definition), there are some free-walking peacocks, we see ducks, geese, guinea fowl, even canary habitats. The smaller museum offers an insight into the most important highlights of the monastery (and its surroundings). Photography is prohibited in the museum. Free large parking.

Best is the scenic view on the monastery just before you reach it. And the splendid vista around!

Great experience. The location of the monastery is definitely worth. The sakharian scenery travels you to Morocco or Tunisia. Not crowded at all even though we visited in the high season. The museum has a big variety of items. The people in the monastery are also having a farm of animals like ducks etc.

The lovely monastery with many great icons and remains of saints. The museum is small but worth seeing. They have a little farm attached to the monster with peacocks, geese, emu and deer. €3 entrance, cash. If you want to pay by card you need to pay at the tavern nearby. In the museum shop, you can buy various icons for €3+, scents, burners, candles or rosaries.(cash/card), Free large parking.
