In the center of the small island Chelonaki, in the heart of Navarino Bay, stands a modest monument that was erected to commemorate the 272 British officers and sailors who fell during the heroic naval battle of Navarino on October 20, 1827. The English, under the command of Admiral Edward Codrington, formed part of a coalition with the French and Russian navies against the Turkish fleet accompanied by the Egyptian fleet. The Battle ended in a severe defeat of the Turks (about 6,000 killed on the Turkish side and about 60 ships that sank, versus about 650 killed by the Allies) had a huge impact on the Greek War of Independence and it occupies a place of honor in the Greek history. Brave British warriors who gave their lives for the independence of Greece. May they rest in peace.
