The Church of Our Lady of Kleftrina or, as they call it, the Church of Our Lady of Thieves (patroness of thieves), but such a translation is given by those who do not know the Greek history ... Clefts (a game with the Greek word cleft, meaning a thief and a rebel) is Greek. Κλέφτες, - so in Greece, during the Ottoman Empire, they called the fighters for the liberation of Greece from the Ottomans. Clefts became people who wanted to preserve the Orthodox religion and freedom. The people sang them as heroes. The clefts themselves called themselves “polycars” (in the lane “brave guys”). Marine clefts - pirates, attacked Turkish ships. The Clefts organized a squadron of armed ships that could withstand the naval forces of the Ottoman Empire. Turkish invaders called Cleft thieves.

Die Pirateninsel sollte man mal gesehen haben. Absolut gigantischer Ausblick.
You should have seen the pirate island. Absolutely gigantic view. A nice piece of history. But definitely wear sturdy shoes. Since the ascent to the fortress is not exactly a walk. Although there are some old stages ... But they have a high kick. Then there are also routes that lead over rocks. The whole thing is not easy and should not be underestimated. Especially in the heat. The fortress is approximately at an altitude of about 150m. When you're upstairs .... great view. Have fun

Beautiful views from the top, steep fortress approach. The fortress shows that it is a pity that it is neglected.

Due to the high traffic, the climb is slow. Make sure you have water. The reward at the end of the 20-minute climb: a magnificent panorama of the lagoon and Gramvoussa.
