Στην πλατεία, που βρίσκεται μπροστά του, έγινε η παράδοση της πόλης από τον Τούρκο διοικητή στον ελληνικό στρατό στις 16 Οκτωβρίου 1912. Η ημέρα αυτή είναι η εθνική Γιορτή της πόλης και τιμάται με καταθέσεις στεφάνων, παρελάσεις, ομιλίες .
