Πηγάζει από την ανατολική Ροδόπη, από το όρος Σάπκα εισέρχεται στην Ελλάδα στο ύψος των οικισμών Σκιβ Κλαντένετς και Αλεποχωρίου, περνά από τους οικισμούς Λάδη, Μάνη και Κουφόβουνο, και εκχέεται στον ποταμό Έβρο νότια του Διδυμότειχου. Ο Ιωάννης Κατακουζηνός και ο Νικηφόρος Γρηγοράς αναφέρονται στην βαριά ασθένεια του αυτοκράτορα Ανδρονίκου του Γ΄ του Παλαιολόγου, μετά από κολύμβηση στα νερά του Ερυθροπόταμου το χειμώνα του 1330. Ο αυτοκράτορας είχε περιπέσει σε κώμα και οι ιατροί είχαν απολέσει κάθε ελπίδα. Σε μία στιγμή επαναφοράς των αισθήσεων του, ο Ανδρόνικος ζήτησε νερό από το αγίασμα της Ζωοδόχου Πηγής, το οποίο έφεραν αμέσως. Με αυτό τον ράντισαν και μετά από λίγες μέρες ο αυτοκράτορας ανάρρωσε. Η γέφυρα που διέσχιζε το ποτάμι ήταν κλειστή και εφέτος εγκρίθηκε από την Περιφέρεια Ανατολικής Μακεδονίας και Θράκης η κατασκευή νέας γέφυρας . The Erythropotamos is a tributary of the river Evros. The locals and the Muslims call it "Kızıl Dere" (Red Stream). It originates from the eastern Rhodope, from Mount Sapka enters Greece at the height of the settlements of Skiv Kladenets and Alepochori, passes through the settlements of Ladi, Mani and Koufovouno, and flows into the river Evros south of Didymoteicho. Ioannis Katakouzinos and Nikiforos Grigoras refer to the serious illness of the emperor Andronikos III of Palaiologos, after swimming in the waters of Erythropotamos in the winter of 1330. The emperor had fallen into a coma and the doctors had lost everything. In a moment of restoration of his senses, Andronikos asked for water from the holy water of Zoodochos Pigi, which they brought immediately. He was sprinkled with it and after a few days the emperor recovered. The bridge across the river was closed and this year the construction of a new bridge was approved by the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace.
