A little lower than the acropolis of ancient Alifera, built in the steep cliff above the river Triton, stands the impressive Holy Monastery of the Assumption of the Virgin, known as the Monastery of Sepetos. Interpretations for the name of the Monastery vary. According to one version, Sepeto comes from the phrase "I throw you" that a faithful woman said as she threw her child, buried in the Virgin Mary, from the window of the Church, which was saved. Another interpretation of Sepeto, connects it with the Slavic SOPOT, which means tap, waterfall, since at its foot flows the upper river Triton with its well-known waterfall. The Monastery of Sepetou is a famous medieval monument and at the same time a sacred pilgrimage of thousands of Christians, who adhere to the miraculous power of the icon of Panagia Sepetiotissa. The monastery was founded in 1150 AD. and played an important role during the Byzantine period and the Frankish occupation. During the difficult years of Ottoman rule, the Monastery became a center of historical decisions for the enslaved Greeks. The secret school, which operated until 1821, supplied the place with many patriots, well-known and worthy captains of the Revolution. On August 23, 1915, a fire broke out, which burned the temple and the relics. Only the icon of Panagia Sepetiotissa, the work of the Evangelist Luke, was saved from the flames. The monastery was renovated after the fire and took its current form. Unfortunately, the catastrophic fires of 2007 burned again the surrounding area of ​​the Monastery. The Holy Monastery is for women and is celebrated on the 23rd of August.
