Reaching the ruins of the monastery surrounded by the Wilderness and the absolute silence of the valley is a valuable experience

Many hikers and visitors skip this part. Don't do that. Ruins are worth while to visit.

It is a nice walk but not suitable for small children. The path is safe if the weather is good. I won't recommend it if it is raining.

The ruins of the old philosophers monastery are perched high on the cliffs of the Lousios gorge. A short but stiff climb on stone steps will bring you there. The place is not maintained so take care. Great view of the gorge and Podromo monastery on a cliff on the other side of the gorge

A trully unique and exceptional place! This is the 'original' Filosofou Monastery, which was founded by Ioannis Lampardopoulos in 960 or 967 AD. Lampardopoulos, the 'Philosopher' (hence the name), was a Secretary to the Byzantine Emperor Nikiforos Fokas. The Monastery is built straight up the Rock of Monopori, at an extremely remote and beautiful part of the Lousios Valley. Some sources consider it to be THE OLDEST Byzantine monument in Greece, Worth the visit only for this reason! The Monastery was abandoned in the 17th century, but its ruins remain in a relatively good condition. One can admire the outside walls, the small Katholikon (main Church) with its octagonal dome and its deteriorating frescos (see my pictures), and the ruins of the cells. The whole place is extremely narrow! The Monastery also served as a School during the Ottoman occupation. You can reach it either via the new Filosofou Monastery, or through the Stemnitsa - Dimitsana Menalon trail. Wear hiking shoes and, although it's not extremely dangerous, be careful as the trail is narrow and the Monastery is not maintained for visitors. A must visit in my opinion.

We are greatfull to father Iakovos, Nektarios, Dimitrios and Ioannis for their warm welcoming and their words of holy wisdom. We had the chance to walk the path till the old monastery which offers great views of Lousios Canyon.
