Η Αφροδίτη κατά την αρχαία ελληνική μυθολογίακαι θρησκεία είναι η θεά του έρωτα, της ομορφιάς, της σεξουαλικότητας, της ηδονής και της τεκνοποίησης. Η αντίστοιχη θεότητα της Αρχαίων Ρωμαίων ήταν η Βένους (λατινικά: Venus), ενώ παρουσιάζει και πολλά κοινά στοιχεία με την αιγυπτιακή θεά Άθωρ. Σε αυτήν οφείλει το όνομά του ο πλανήτης Αφροδίτη.

Το πρωτότυπο άγαλμα βρίσκεται στο Λούβρο και είναι της Ελληνιστικής εποχής και θεωρείται το σπουδαιότερο απόκτημά του. Βρέθηκε στη Μήλο το 1820 σε μια εποχή που ήταν πολύ εύκολο για αυτούς που ήξεραν την αξία του να λεηλατήσουν τον αρχαιολογικό μας πλούτο.
