History of Thessaloniki quite neglected in all respects, unfortunately!

The coexistence of modern urban fabric with the Byzantine walls to the west of the city of Thessaloniki. Here one will see houses built in the 20th century resting on the walls of the Byzantine era. Also a beautiful picture is the parks and playgrounds and many benches, surrounded by Byzantine walls!

Western walls Part of the early Christian wall and the wall is preserved in Republic Square. At this point it was raised until 1874, when the main entrance of the city, the Golden Gate, was demolished, from where the main road of the city started, the Roman decumanus maximus and later the Byzantine Avenue. Part of the wall ascends along the current Irini Street, until its junction with Agiou Dimitriou Street, at the height of the second main decumanus of the city. The second main gate from the west opened there, the Lithea that led to the countryside, to the Mygdonian basin and Liti.

Walking along the impressive walls reveals one of the hidden face of the city. Far from its hectic center, it is a good idea to take the time to go through some sections of this city wall. And, from time to time enter in the winding lanes of the high city.

A very calm place where u can find serenity and peace.. loved it. Though the walls are typical all the way long, you keep looking and staring in search of sth nnew.. had I got more ttime, I would have spent more and more hours just walking again and again and again. While you walk you would hear the church bells ring and you would feel how holy the place is.. loved it.. Ps. Take a friend of yours with you so as not to get bored. :))) recommended.

The remains of the wall of Thessaloniki. You can go through the stairs via a small walkway to go all the way round the Western Wall. There are many historical sites all over Thessaloniki, many of which are not widely known. On Google Maps, just tap the compass to see attractions near you and just explore. There are many cats in the area who follow you along the way, I suppose for food or they're just being friendly.
