Το φρούριο Βαρδαρίου,γνωστό στους Θεσσαλονικείς με τις επωνυμίες Τοπ-Χανέ ή Ταμπάκ-Χανέ, από τα βυρσοδεψία που ήταν εγκατεστημένα στην περιοχή του, αποτελείται από έναν πεταλόμορφο ελλειπτικό περίβολο “κολλημένο” στα δυτικά τείχη και μια μικρή προεξοχή προς το βορρά.
Κτίστηκε απο τον Σουλτάνο Σουλεϊμάν Μεγαλοπρεπή, κατά τη διάρκεια μιας σύντομης παραμονής του στην Θεσσαλονικη,τον χειμώνα του 1546 και είναι ίσως έργο του αρχιτέκτονα Σινάν. Το ίδιο χρονικό διάστημα κτίστηκε και ο περίβολος του Λευκού Πύργου.
Είναι ένα πολύ παλιό σύστημα οχυρώσεων (ένας πύργος του, ο πρόβολος Δουργούτη χρονολογείται στον 9ο μ.Χ. αιώνα) που διαρρυθμίστηκε οριστικά ως οπλοθήκη και κανονιοστάσιο τον 16ο αιώνα. Κάτω από την τοιχοποιία βρέθηκαν πολλά ανακουφιστικά τόξα, μεγάλου πάχους, που χρησίμευαν για την απορρόφηση των κυμάτων της θάλασσας που έφτανε έως εκεί.
Top Hane, the Tower of Vardar
The fortress of Vardari, known to the Thessalonians by the names Top-Hane or Tabak-Hane, from the tanneries that were installed in its area, consists of a horseshoe-shaped elliptical enclosure "stuck" in the western walls and a small ledge to the north.
It was built by Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, during a short stay in Thessaloniki, in the winter of 1546 and is probably the work of the architect Sinan. The precinct of the White Tower was built at the same time.
It is a very old system of fortifications (one of its towers, the Dourgoutis cantilever dates back to the 9th century AD) that was definitively designed as an armory and cannon in the 16th century. Beneath the masonry were found many relief arches, of great thickness, which were used to absorb the waves of the sea that reached there.
