Μεδεών είναι το όνομα αρχαίας ελληνικής πόλης της Ακαρνανίας, που βρισκόταν στην επαρχία Ξηρομέρου, σε απόσταση 1 χιλιομέτρου περίπου ΝΑ της σημερινής Κατούνας. Το όνομα της πόλης προήλθε από τον Μεδεώνα, το γιο του Πυλάδη και της Ηλέκτρας. Περί το 350-300 π.Χ. η Μεδεώνα έκοβε δικά της νομίσματα. Δείγματα νομισμάτων της Μεδεώνος υπάρχουν σήμερα στο Μουσείο Αγρινίου. Τον 6ο αιώνα π.Χ. οι Ακαρνάνες συγκρότησαν ένα ομοσπονδιακό κράτος που το αποκαλούσαν «Κοινό των Ακαρνάνων», μέλος δε αυτού ήταν και η Μεδεών, κάτι που στάθηκε αιτία να βρίσκεται σε συνεχή πόλεμο με τους Αιτωλούς. Ακολούθησαν οι περσικοί πόλεμοι, όπου η Μεδεών σύμφωνα με τη γραμμή του «Κοινού» δεν έλαβε μέρος. Στη δεκαετία 460-450 π.Χ. η Μεδεών μαζί με τους λοιπές Ακαρνάνες έλαβαν μέρος σε εκστρατεία για την απελευθέρωση των Οινιάδων που είχαν καταλάβει τμήμα των Μεσσηνίων.

Medeon is the name of the ancient Greek city of Akarnania, located in the province of Xiromero, about 1 kilometer SE of present-day Katouna. The name of the city came from Medeon, the son of Piladus and Electra. About 350-300 BC Medea cut her own coins. Samples of Médonos coins are available today at the Agrinio Museum. In the 6th century BC the Acarnanians formed a federal state called the "Acarnanian community", and the Medes were also a member of that, which led to a constant war with the Aetolians.
