H	Holger Heerdegen on Google ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Leider aufgrund von umfangreichen Sanierungsarbeiten geschlossen, aber schön zu sehen, daß auch hier Geschichtliches erhalten bleibt. Die Festung ist wesentlich kleiner als die anderen venezianischen Festungen in Chania und Rethymno, was aber ihren Charme nicht mindert. Die Mauer des Forts ist umlaufend erhalten, bzw. erneuert. Sehenswert, auch wenn noch nicht viel zu sehen ist. Unfortunately closed due to extensive renovation work, but nice to see that something historical has been preserved here too. The fortress is much smaller than the other Venetian fortresses in Chania and Rethymno, but that doesn't reduce its charm. The wall of the fort has been preserved or renewed all around. Worth seeing, even if there isn't much to see yet.
A	Alfhild Halland on Google ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The fortress of Frangocastello was built by the Venetian between 1371 to 1374 at the time when the Venetian had occupied Crete.They built the fortress to protect them from pirates and rebellious locals. It was repaired several times until 1645, when the Venetian confronted the Ottomans. The local hero; Daskaloiannis occupied the fortress in 1770, but was captured by the Ottomans and killed in Iraklio. It is not much to see inside the walls, because it is under constant excavations and restoration, and the area you can enter is restricted. But you can enter the fortress and climb the southwest tower. It was the biggest and most important tower, and the wiew from the top is breathtaking If you are especially interested in flowers, you can see a lot of rare flowers around the fortress and the nearby surroundings.
