Very impressive spectacle of the celebration of the battle of Crete

Historic airfield that may not be visited or photographed. Today belongs to the opposite barracks of the Greek paratroopers. There are only old, disused aircraft (Northrop F-5 Tiger 2, Republic F-84, F 86 Sabre, Lockheed F 104 Starfighter, Lockheed T-33 T-Bird ) and a few sports machines (Cessna 172, Chirokkee). No hangars or similar facilities, just an old, 2,000 m long runway in the background. Question: What's even remotely confidential about that? Since I've seen other things, especially as an active Air Force soldier, that are freely accessible!

An airport of great historical importance located within a military base, only thanks to the conquest of this small airport, the Germans were able to complete the conquest of the entire island, hence in fact began the German offensive. The airport has been closed since 1959, locked and fenced and surrounded by lush vegetation befitting a "true military base" but well visible from the road leading to Kissamos. A number of old planes used by the Greek Air Force are stationed in the field, as well as a monument in memory of the difficult battles that accompanied the German occupation of the island.

Maleme airfield marks the first location where paratroopers were used in combat. Though it was the German Fallschirmjäger who landed, this was the decisive moment where the Allies understood the disruptive capability and combat viability of the parachute infantry.

Historicly this was the first and only airfield captured by German paratroopers during World war 2. The German paras suffered very heavy losses. After securing this airfield transport aircraft arrived with soldiers to re enforce the paras. On the hill to the south overlooking the airfield is the graveyard to the German Paratroopers. Unfortunately the airport cannot be visited as it is a military base.

This was an old bombing range when I visited in 1991. I was here on leave with another Airman from the USAF. We were riding around this area (doing donuts) on motorcycles when I notice many BDU-33 practice bombs laying around. Just then, I saw what appeared to be a half-track with soldiers in the back coming at us down the air strip. We quickly left, that was fun. :)
