A tragedy took place here, when Greeks defended against the invading turks and in the final battle blew up the ammunition storage to avoid being taken prisoners and enslaved. Must see place to understand Cretan and Greek history.

Go there early. It opens from 9am. Later full busses of turists will flood the Monastery. When we went the electricity was out so it was hard to see darker rooms. They also sell vine they make 7€ bottle.

Beautiful old buildings from 16th century. Nice and quiet place to visit. We were lucky to see all roses in full bloom!

3 euro entry fee well worth it. The Arkadi is an important historical structure begun in the 5th century, with most of the current buildings dating to the 16th century and after 1866. Of more recent importance is Arkadi as representative of Cretan freedom from the Ottomans, resulting from the self-sacrifice of hundreds of women and children preferring to die before being taken by the Ottoman troops in 1866. It is an active monastery so appropriate dress is recommended (men: no hats, no tank tops, women: shoulders covered and at least knee length skirts/shorts).

Beautiful, historic church and monastery. Well conserved peace of Greek history. Totally worth the money and drive to get there.

Unless someone really knows its great history or is really really into monastery architecture it is not worth the drive. The condition isn‘t the best anymore. The 3 € fee was fine but there are monasteries in better condition to visit in crete.

Absolutely a must see when you are in the area! Definitely read the history before or during your visit to understand the background. During the high season there can be lots of tourist so if you prefer more calmness I recommend coming in the morning. There are many little places to discover and you can walk around freely. Parking & toilets are also available as well a little souvenir shop inside the monastery where you can find unique Greek Orthodox icons, prayer ropes etc.. The small entrance fee is worth it since the place is in great condition and well cared for. I would like to mention that Greek Orthodox churches and monasteries might have a little different etiquette then your own country. Long skirts (knee length) are preferred for women and men should take of their hats inside, generally dressing moderate is always appreciated. It's not obligated but you might consider it out of respect. ?
