If you climb the citadel, take a look at this church at least. Its calm and its atmosphere are welcome after this small climb.

The church of Panagia Theoskepasti [Παναγία Θεοσκεπάστη] and Agia Anastasia Farmakolytria [Αγία Αναστασία Φαρμακολύτρια], the only Orthodox temple of Kastro, is located behind the Catholic Cathedral of Chora, Naxos. This church is so much hidden that despite its beauty it is little known to the point that it is often generically referred to as the Orthodox Church [Ορθόδοξος Ναός]. I discovered it because I was invited to enter by the caretaker who was sitting on a chair outside. It seems that this church predates the construction of the Kastro which was begun after the conquest of Naxos, which took place in 1207, by the Venetians. It consists of two rooms full of well-preserved ancient icons. The right aisle is dedicated to Santa Anastasia Farmakolytria (or the one who prepares drugs) also known as Santa Anastasia di Sirmio, who lived in the third century AD. and venerated by both the Catholic and Orthodox churches. Instead the left aisle is dedicated to the Panagia Theoskepasti (or the Virgin Mary covered / protected by God). The attached photos refer to this nave; these photos show above all the icons of the beautiful wooden iconostasis, including an old Byzantine icon of the Virgin Mary dated, due to its style, to the era of the Paleologians who were the last dynasty to rule the Byzantine Empire between 1259 and 1453. The feast of this church is celebrated on 8 September.
