The passage of the Samaria gorge is something that the traveler who arrives in Crete should not miss. The wild beauty of Greece in all its glory! Starting from Omalos, the route is always downhill, so it should not be difficult. But the kilometers are many. It is advisable to wear comfortable shoes and start very early in the morning. Extremely organized space all the way. There is plenty of water in all the rest areas.

It consists of the gorge of Samaria with the surrounding slopes and other smaller gorges. In the unique landscapes of the forest live more than 450 species of plants and many species of animals. Some of these plants, such as the dittany, and animals, such as the Cretan ibex or kri kri, are endemic to Crete, ie they are found only in this place.

Unacceptable signage, bridges of the plate, and no one tells you that just with the rubber shoes you can take it off, for 4 days I could not walk.

There are reputed to be at least 1000 gorges on Crete and I can't claim to have visited even half of them, but have no doubt this is the most spectacular. The sight of the limestone mass of Gingilos to your right as you make your way down to the valley floor is enough to secure Samaria's position as number 1, but there is much more to see as you wend your way along the well trodden path towards the Iron Gates - a narrow defile a little over half way. Start early and you may be rewarded by the sight of wildlife and spring wildflowers in the higher reaches. Once past the defile the landscape opens up, the mountains are lower and more gentle. If you've come from Omalos, you may be surprised to meet people coming in the opposite direction. For the time-pressed, the easy option is to start from where the boat drops you off at Ag. Roumeli and walk inland towards the Iron Gates, turning round whenever you've had enough and heading back to the boat. It's certainly easier this way, but it misses the spectacle of the high mountains!

This gorge is the mosts famous on e in Crete, roughly 18km walk from the Omalos plateau down to the see. Be there very early, avoid weekends and high season months like July and August and you will be rewarded with a spectacular hike. Wear good footwear, you might want to take some trekking sandals with you because your feet WILL get wet. For the experienced Hiker its not a big challenge but it's definitely NOT a hike for the average "Selfie" Tourist. Be aware that once you reach the sea, you can take boat to Sougia. Please DO NOT litter this park, take all your stuff with you and leave no trace of you behind. Thank you

We started our hike at 08:00 in the morning and finished the route near the beach at 15:00 one of the most beautiful journeys I have ever experienced, every kilometer you have a different view and you learn and see how people lived in the past. If I could I would do this route again ?
