Everyone visiting Crete should visit the gorge at least once. It's quite an easy walk yet very long and you should always check the way because some parts of the path can be very slippery. A lot of the walk is in the sahde so its not too hot. At the end of the gorge you can skip the last 3 km to Agia Roumeli with a bus for 2 euro. Lovely views. I come back every few years.

Bewilderingly good walk. Tough going, but oh! so thrilling. Your legs will suffer from aches two days later and you might walk like Tinman from the film, The Wizzard of Oz, but it will have still been worth the experience. Cameras obligatory, well you'd be daft, or unfortunate not to have some personal photos of your epic walk. Definatetly go on an organised tour, you may think you could put together your own itinerary for the Gorge for less expense but it will cost you more in the long run. Besides, there's the added advantage of your personal safety by being in a professionally organised tour. They have you covered in any event. Totally recommended. The walk itself starts off on a rocky mix of various stone sizes on purposely designated man made steps and paths. There are handrails in places. The first 3km are probably where you should be cautious from tripping over, thereafter, its still advisory to watch your step, but it's easier to walk for most of the way, with several exceptions, stepping stone and ladder river crossings. Eventually, the walk does come to a cellabratory end. There are vendors selling pure orange juice, cafes, and lastly the ferry area, Agia Roumeli, where there are dozens of café, restaurant and souvenir outlets for your complete appreciaton before you leave on your scheduled ferry.

A must do tour in Crete. You'll feel a "little" muscle strain after, and the following day but it's worth it. (If you are not an every day hiker) ~14-16 km depends if you take a bus for 2€ at the end (for about 2 km-s) or not.

Very nice hike! However, if you are not comfortable with/used to walk in a rugged terrain - expect it to be challenging.

We started our trip at 08:00 in the morning and finished the route near the beach at 15:00 one of the most beautiful journeys I have ever experienced, every kilometer you have a different view and you learn and see how people lived in the past. If I could I would do this route again. You will arrive equipped with a water bottle, food, a camera and lots of mood ? The route takes between 6-8 depending on everyone's walking pace

Amazing hike in the heart of Crete. A must do in the island. Most of the hike is under the shade and you can refill your water every 1h more or less. You also have WC along the way. It a 6h hike down hill, difficulty is minimum.

The descent through the Gorge is breathtaking, a truly marvelous experience. 16 km in length (from trailhead to the beach), this ‘hike’ starts with a staircase and trail descending down into the gorge and then becomes a path that zig zags across the river, over wooden bridges and hopping stones, and past the ruins of Old Samaria. Every twist and turn is a new vista until you come to the dramatic 3 meter wide section near the end of the trail where the gorge converges. Follow the hike up with lunch in Agia Roumeli and a swim in the Mediterranean. This experience can’t be beat. Recommend joining a tour - the one we did got us to the top, on to the ferry and bus return but otherwise you hiked at your own pace without the guide. Just cuts down on the ‘how to get to and from’ and makes the day that much more enjoyable.
