★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Ο Άγιος Ιωάννης, από παιδί διακρίθηκε για τη σπάνια εγκράτεια του και για το πάθος του προς τη νηστεία, πράγμα που του έδωσε και την προσωνυμία του Νηστευτή.
Ο Άγιος και Θεοφόρος Ιωάννης ο Νηστευτής, Πατριάρχης Κωνσταντινουπόλεως, γεννήθηκε στην Κωνσταντινούπολη και όταν έγινε έφηβος έκανε το επάγγελμα του χαράκτη.
Η καρδιά του όμως, ήταν δοσμένη στα θεία και κάθε μέρα διάβαζε την Αγία Γραφή και άλλα θρησκευτικά βιβλία, πλουτίζοντας έτσι τις γνώσεις του. Τα πλεονεκτήματα του αυτά, εκτίμησε ο Πατριάρχης Ιωάννης ο Γ' και τον χειροτόνησε διάκονο.
Από τη θέση αυτή ανέπτυξε ιδιαίτερα την ελεημοσύνη, βοηθώντας πλήθος φτωχών και άλλων απόρων. Αργότερα έγινε πρεσβύτερος, και μετά το θάνατο του Πατριάρχη Ευτυχίου, με κοινή υπόδειξη αρχόντων και λαού, εκλέχτηκε διάδοχος του ο Ιωάννης ο Νηστευτής σαν Ιωάννης Δ' (12/04/582 μ.Χ. επί βασιλέως Μαυρικίου).
Κοιμήθηκε στις 2 Σεπτεμβρίου του 595 μ.Χ. και το λείψανο του τάφηκε στο ναό των Αγίων Αποστόλων. Ανακηρύχθηκε άγιος και η μνήμη του τιμάται από την Ορθόδοξη Εκκλησία στις 2 Σεπτεμβρίου.
Η Κάρα του Αγίου βρίσκεται στη Μονή Αγάθωνος Φθιώτιδος.
Αποτμήματα του Ιερού Λειψάνου του Αγίου βρίσκονται στις Μονές Ιβήρων Αγίου Όρους και Βαρνάκοβας Ναυπακτίας.
Saint John, as a child, was distinguished for his rare temperance and for his passion for fasting, which also gave him the nickname of Fasting.
Saint and Theophoros Ioannis the Confessor, Patriarch of Constantinople, was born in Constantinople and when he was a teenager he became an engraver.
His heart, however, was devoted to the divine, and he read the Bible and other religious books daily, thereby enriching his knowledge. These benefits were appreciated by Patriarch John III and he was ordained a deacon.
From this position he developed alms in particular, helping many poor and needy. He later became a senior, and after the death of Patriarch Euthecus, with the common suggestion of nobles and people, John the Nastiest was succeeded as John IV (12/04/582 AD by King Mauritius).
He slept on September 2, 595 AD. and his remains were buried in the church of the Holy Apostles. He was declared saint and commemorated by the Orthodox Church on September 2.
