Beautiful old place - ruins of old monastery where small chapel is in a good shape and it's being used. You'll spend there 20-30 minutes, entrance is 2€ for an adult.

Interesting location. Amazing position. Needs some care that hopefully will come soon concluding from ongoing repair works…

Charming ruins of an old oil mill, built in 1863. Located next to the Monastery of Saint George, it is property of the more well known Monastery of Agia Triada (Holy Trinity Monastery) in Chania. The surrounding nature is beautiful as it is in the middle of an olive grove, it feels really serene. Some reconstruction should take place but even at this state is nice to visit.

Monastery Agios Georgios is located 1.5 km southeast of village Vamos, at the site where the settlement of Karydi, Agios Georgios, was built. The monastery was abandoned for many years, but was restored in 1996 and was reopened. One of the unique characteristics of the monastery is the beautiful structure of the large olive mill with the 12 arches (whose roof has collapsed), on the south side of the monastery. The structure contained 4 stations for the production of olive oil, of which only the built base remained, while the millstones were removed from their place. The size of the complex indicates the huge amount of raw material that was processed here and the impressive production capacity of the site. There is no doubt that the olive oil produced here at the time, had high quality, befitting the incredible production talent of the locals.

This place is so nice a little Jem to be fair. If your of to Chania for the day it’s about a 10 minute drive of the national road. 2€ entry fee taken by a couple of lovely old ladies that will help. And tel you about the history and ruins. There is a WC just as you enter on the right hand side Be sure to look around it all as thought it’s not huge parts can be missed Cheers M

A favourite of mine at every visit to Crete. Very close to Vamos and isolated in the countryside. Exceptional for its ancient olive oil press and cellar.

Beautiful piece of history. Monastery was founded at the early 17th century. It was located within the village settlement with 10 families living there. The village was destroyed during the Turkish occupation. This unfortunate event forced 6 families to leave and other 4 to convert to Islam. In order to keep the monastery intact, the priest living here has to pay taxes to Turks. At the mid 18th century the monastery got its “freedom” and the people from the village were more free to work for themselves. This led to produce of the olive oil on the grand scale even. In the 19th century monastery was able to provide work for more people and by the mid 19th century they were producing 25k barrels per year. Then the sh*t show happened again, the factory was destroyed and now you can see the remainings of objects surrounding the monastery. They were also famous for their custom built oil press (similar to water mil mechanism). Entrance is 2 euros per person. It takes less than 30 minutes to walk through it.
