ΑΓΡΙΛΕΖΑ The Marble Quarry For the Temple of Poseidon in Sounio. In the valley of Agrileza, about 4 km north of the cape of Sounio, are the quarries from which the marble was mined for the construction of the temple of Poseidon and Athena in Sounio. An ancient road, still preserved from time to time, leads from Sounio to the quarries. Its extraction dates back to the 5th century BC. ai. and was made on many fronts, some of which are still visible today. According to Lepsius (1893), who first geologically mapped Attica, the quarries are not large and show the diligent and characteristic way of exploiting the ancients: vertical planes and fronts perpendicular to each other, horizontally carved surfaces, circular cavities, of which have the vertebrae of the columns of the temples of Sounio were excavated, and other traces that testify to the “antiquity” of these quarries, which have been little disturbed by the younger ones.
