The inspiring ancient Theatre of Delos, is located in the heart of the remarkable archeological site of the island of Delos (One of the Cyclades islands, 25 km north to Paros and Naxos). The uninhabited island was one of the most important religious centers of ancient Greece. In this island according to the Greek mythology, Apollo, the god of light, was born. The theater of Delos which had a capacity of up to 6,500 spectators, is one of the fewest ancient theaters that was entirely constructed from marble. Its construction started around 314 BC and ended around 250 BC. The site was abandoned In 88 BC, after the Mithridates plundered the island. The first excavations at the site started at end of the 19th century by the French School of Archaeology at Athens. Although the site has undergone some conservation and renovation work in recent years, there are some important parts (as the cavea, the stage building and the cistern of the theater) that were preserved in a very poor condition and requires significant restoration work. Two years ago, the theater hosted a first performance after 2,100 years, “Hera” a one-act opera, which became an exceptional experience for those lucky viewers who arrived to watch it. The site is considered as one of the island's major tourist attractions and thousands of tourist visit it along the year. The panoramic view from the place is amazing, and if you happen to arrive in the afternoon hours, you shall probably experience a beautiful romantic sunset!

Great day out, we paid for a tour guide but to be honest this really slowed down the experience & there's information boards at all the artifacts anyway which tells you most of the information you need & stops the experience feeling like a school outing & also keeps the cost down too.

Delos is absolutely one of the many wonders of the world. So much history is available here and just waiting to be discovered. I highly recommend visiting and NOT taking the Delos Tour Guide plan. You'll be thankful and be able to entertain your inner wanderlust as you scour the ruins to discover for yourself firsthand the richness that is the island of Delos!
